Notes: Crocosmia is a grassland plant from South Africa and other countries in Southern Africa. As already noted, these plants evolved to be pollinated by sunbirds. I would be extremely wary of planting a species of this plant in the USA or southern Canada to avoid introducing an invasive plant. Fortunately, the Crocosmia most often on sale is a sterile hybrid that does not harm the environment. Crocosmia 'Lucifer" is an absolutely beautiful plant that hummingbirds adapt well to. It is eye-catching if grown as a standalone species in large groups. This will attract a lot of attention from visitors as well as the hummingbirds when the stunning flowers are in bloom. In a well drained soil and in a zone 5 sunny microclimate, the corms can be left over the winter. The corms will have to be dug up anywhere colder. |
